Imagine you had a friend that was building a business or starting a new project and consistently failed to complete tasks and everything he or she told you they would do. This friend couldn’t find the time to get their website built, or domain purchased. This friend was too busy to write the next chapter of their book or the blog they’ve been telling you about for 6 months.
This friend was working too hard on unimportant things and completely forgot to put their digital press kit together last year… and yet they call you every week complaining about their financial stress and frustration. Now...I am not psychic, but I can bet money that it wouldn’t take long before you sat them down for a serious talk about the future of your friendship and your accountability promise to each other. The old saying is that birds of a feather flock together, and most of us have plans to soar. Though, sometimes rather than have the honest conversation with our friends, we cut the excuse makers off or transition into other social circles with more like minded associates. For some reason, this is very easy and we tend to move on with no problem because we recognize the need to drop dead weight. However, we don’t do the same when WE are as guilty of the same behaviors of said friend we had to “cut off”. For this blog post, I want to ask why, then, do you continue to accept these and other excuses from yourself? Why is your lack of business development allowed to continue, even when you know how important certain tasks are to your future growth and financial security? Now, before you go thinking I’m being way too hard on you, know this: we all struggle with this very issue. We all put our clients, our family, our friends, and even the neighbor we barely know before ourselves. But I’m giving you permission right now to stop doing that, and start treating yourself as the VIP you really are. It’s time to put your business growth ahead of that of your clients and low level of living – in stress, in lack, in confusion, in disarray etc. etc. Only by doing that will you be able to reach a larger audience, help more people, and achieve the goals you’ve set for yourself to make all of the strain and struggle worth it in the end. I know… easier said the done right? Truthfully NO. You have to choose and decide to make the time and the task a priority and a habit. The simplest way to do this is to make appointments with yourself. That hour or two you have free on Thursday afternoon to watch Scandal, or shop online it the perfect time. Pick 60 minutes a day and don’t book a anything in that spot. Book yourself. Mark it on your calendar, and treat it as an unbreakable appointment, just as you would an appointment with a client or your doctor or your accountant. Spend the time working on the things that are important to the continued growth of your business.
Basically, do those things you tell your friends to do—the things your influential circle and mentor is advising. Don’t create the habit of pushing tasks aside for “later” or “after other tasks are done. Elevate yourself to VIP status and start putting yourself first. Your business will thank you for it and your bank account will surely benefit. If you need help! Sign up for one of our FREE coaching discovery calls and subscribe to our free resource newsletter.
